Best Medical Therapy (BMT)

All patients with atherosclerosis should be considered for as Best Medical Therapy (BMT) which comprises:

  • Complete and permanent cessation of smoking. For help and advice visit http://www.givingupsmoking.co.uk/

  • Regular exercise (e.g. 30 minutes of walking each day)

  • Weight control

  • Anti-platelet agent (e.g. Aspirin 75mg or Clopidogrel 75mg daily)

  • Lipid lowering therapy - usually achieved with a statin (e.g. Simvastatin 40mg daily at night).

  • Diagnosis and treatment of high blood pressure

  • Diagnosis and treatment of diabetes

Many patients find that once they are established on BMT their symptoms of intermittent claudication improve to the point where no further specific treatment is required.

However, if symptoms persist then patients may benefit from further investigations and one of more so-called adjuvant treatment such as
